Happy Mountain Day!

This Is Why We Need More Nature in Our Lives

By Ed Rich - December 14, 2018

Whether it’s getting some downtime in a natural hot spring like our studio manager Emily or scaling some rocks like our marketing director Carolina, the mountains are an important resource for us as individuals and as a global community.

It can be stressful to think about the changes to the climate and how we impact climate change, but it is a necessity. Land degradation and more extreme natural disasters are more likely with aggravated climate change and the increased use of limited resources which continue to threaten our natural environments.

Mountains support 25% of land-based animals and plants and also supply 60-80% of the world’s freshwater resources. Over 600 glaciers worldwide have shrunk and/or disappeared in just a few decades, impacting water supplies for people and animals alike. Mountains matter, and if we want to continue enjoying the beauty and benefits they offer, we must do what we can to help preserve our natural surroundings before it’s too late.

The Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku or forest bathing is a type of meditation in natural surroundings that also reminds us to be thankful for the all the mountains give us. On an individual level, spending time outside helps us produce Vitamin D with the help of sunlight. Being in the sun also helps us set a natural Circadian rhythm to get better sleep. We also improve our eye health by getting away from computer screens and other devices when we opt to get some fresh air and exercise.

Nature can have a profound effect on your health - one study shows people who spend time in nature had lower heart rates, blood pressure, and cortisol levels. Another 2009 study found people the closer someone lives to a green space, the healthier they were likely to be and moreover, less likely to have anxiety or depression.

“My photo was taken with my husband and dog Samson while hiking in Breckenridge.  The main reason we moved to Denver was to be close to the mountains!  I love hiking and being in nature no matter the weather- I find it to be therapeutic.  It helps me forget the chaos and worries of everyday life while getting fresh air and exercise.  Plus, my German Shepherd loves it.

Come visit one of our LoDo Massage Studio locations near downtown Denver. Both are easily accessible on your way back from the mountains, whether you’re coming down 36 from a jaunt in Boulder or a (hopefully not too long) ride back on I-70 after skiing the Rockies .
